IMPACT UNLEASHED:
SAINT URSULA STUDENT’S 2-YEAR JOURNEY
FROM JAKARTA TO BOSTON

By Janice Hadiprodjo & Regina Aprilia

Is it possible to achieve great things worldwide coming from an international student from a developing country? A prompt many of us ponder upon, a fantasy of living our desired reality. But alas, coming from Indonesia, Livia Monika, a Saint Ursula alumni, proved that thought that was once considered simply a concept or idea can indeed be accomplished.

Hailing from the vibrant city of Jakarta, Livia Monika, only at 20 years old, can be considered as one of the most influential youths of our generation. This can be seen with the receiving of the prestigious Diana Award in recognition of the work she’s done with her non-profit organization, BantuYuk. Not only having received an award so grand, she also attended the big beauty pageant, Gadis Sampul, in 2019. Along with the fact that she is now a Boston University alumni, she is visibly an incredible young woman who has achieved great things and will continue to do so.Livia Monika's transformative journey stems from her disciplined education in an exclusive and rigorous institution, Saint Ursula. Within the 6 years of studying there - coming in as a mere 7th grader in 2015 and graduating high school in 2021 - the education she got shaped her a lot as a person, from the way she sees life to her personal characteristics. “Sanur has shaped me to be more resilient in everything I do, to tirelessly chase what I want, but to also put heart and be considerate to people wherever I go”, an inspiring take on school lessons. “The values Sanur taught me are my moral compass to take decisions in life”, like Livia said herself, we can apply the strict rules Sanur teaches and use them as a moral compass.Take it from the “It Girl” herself, the values she learned while in Saint Ursula helped her finish her time in Boston University from having to do 4 years, to only doing 2. Having done multiple activities in her high school years - having to balance the school’s harsh curriculum with extracurriculars and organizational work - it paved the way for her university years, already being used to the busy, hustling life. Though not much of a struggle, she still put her best in every class she attended, while also being active in organizations and communities she was in, at the same time living her best life socially in Boston.Furthermore, “One of the most important values I learned is probably one of the Serviam core values: to serve”. Now working for a company, Livia applies this value to her work daily, giving her best for the betterment of both herself and the company. This dedication also extends to her work with BantuYuk, where she aspires to make positive change for the people close to her heart. Beyond professional contexts, she embodies this in her interpersonal relationships—be they friendships, romantic connections, or professional affiliations. “It is not anymore what I can get or if this relationship can benefit me, but it’s about what I can give”, she asserts.Livia imparts a piece of advice to upcoming students of Saint Ursula going into university: “Be persistent in what you want and always put your best effort so you don’t regret! There are so many things you can explore while still having fun in uni, but don’t lose yourself wherever you are and hold on to the values you think are important. Don’t be afraid of failures ‘cause you can ALWAYS get back up! Goodluck sweethearts hihi <3”In essence, her journey from Saint Ursula to her current achievements is a testament to the transformative power of education and the values imbibed during those crucial years. The environment of the school, combined with its emphasis on discipline and unity, laid the foundation for her to become an independent, resilient, and accomplished individual. Hard work and determination can only get you so far, the question is how far are you willing to go?
